As a follow up, according to the homepage of geocaching.com, they just passed 1,000,000 hides!  Not sure exactly when it happened, but sometime in the last week for certain.

I don't think they kept very close track of it publicly.  But I'm betting there was some wagering going on at HQ in Seattle.  ;)
