Systems Administrator
Charlotte Latin School seeks a Systems Administrator for a full-time, 12-month position that will begin on July 2, 2012. The Systems Administrator will report to the Director of Technology and will implement various IT projects that include installing and maintaining hardware and software and providing support to end-users. The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as individually, is critical.

Specific responsibilities for the position include the following:

managing and conducting advanced troubleshooting and maintenance for PCs, servers, mobile devices, applications and other IT-related devices and software
installing and maintaining the life-cycle of PCs, servers, LAN network connectivity equipment and supplies
managing back-up solutions for servers and other equipment
applying technical knowledge and expertise to ensure operating systems perform efficiently
providing new staff with PC/account set-up
managing all email and user accounts
handling end-user support requests
informing the Director of Technology of issues that could result in service outages
monitoring critical services on a 24/7 basis, along with the Director of Technology
assisting the Director of Technology with implementing and maintaining equipment inventory
performing other duties as assigned
Requirements for the position include the following:

a Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of system administration experience
a knowledge of best IT practices and principles needed to solve computer and software problems
highly developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
the ability to analyze documentation, think proactively and manage projects
intermediate IT troubleshooting skills
experience assisting users with hardware and software implementation projects server deployments, Laptop and PC set-up
experience with Operating Systems: Windows XP - Windows 7, Windows 2003 - 2008 R2 Server Office 2003 to Office 2010
experience with Back-up Software, Fault Tolerance (Raid, disk mirroring)
experience with AD (Active Directory) , DNS, DHCP, RDP, Hyper-V / Virtual Servers, VoIP
experience with Application servers such as Microsoft SQL Server and Exchange Server 2007/2010
knowledge of content filtering software/appliance firewalls
an understanding of Mobile operating systems such as Blackberry, Android and iPhone
knowledge of virtualization technology and concepts
solid problem-solving and organizational skills
at least 3 years of experience in troubleshooting, operating, and maintaining endpoint security such as malware detection and mitigation

the bachelors and 5 years exp kills it for me, otherwise i wouldn't have a problem handling those tasks. Doesn't the computer age understand yet that we don't need degrees to understand how to build, fix and work on computers?

It isn't always the ability alone that lands you a job.  Given 100 candidates that can ALL perform tasks A, B and C, some companies are only interested in those that they feel can perform tasks A, B, and C along with A1-A7, D1-22.  Completion of a degree certifies that a candidate should have certain qualifications and has a higher chance of being able to perform the additional tasks as well as function in a certain environment.  This said, I suffer from the same issue where I do not have a degree in the field I work.  It causes issues for me as well at times but the RoI on a degree is minimal for me at this point in life.
